Should You Build an Indoor or Outdoor Sauna?

Only you know what your dream sauna looks like. Should you opt for an indoor sauna, or build an outdoor sauna that is separate from the house? Sometimes the choice is simple. For example, if you live in an apartment, you will have to build a sauna indoors. But if you plan to build a sauna for your house or summer cottage, it is better to think about your options before starting construction.

Should You Build an Indoor or Outdoor Sauna?

Convenience – or closeness to nature

Indoor and outdoor saunas have their own advantages and disadvantages. Indoor saunas are more comfortable in many ways. They allow you to enjoy your sauna at home, right next to your shower and bathroom, making it very convenient.

On the other hand, outdoor saunas can sometimes offer a more original experience. If you are lucky enough to live near a lake or the sea, an outdoor sauna right by the water is the ultimate luxury.

Does an outdoor sauna require electricity?

If you plan to build your sauna outdoors, you need to consider whether you need to install water and electricity. If so, that will be an additional expense. Another option is to use a wood burning stove, which allows you to enjoy the wonderful smell of flames without the need for electricity.

Cooling and bathing water

If you build your sauna indoors, you can easily use it in the shower or bathtub. It can be used anytime you feel like having a sauna, whether in the morning, during your lunch break, or before bed. If you have an electric heater, you can have the sauna warm and ready to use in a very short time.

And being outdoors, you might not even have running water. That's okay! It's just a different sauna experience. If your sauna doesn't have running water, you can place a water tank next to the heater. That way, you can shower with warm water after your sauna session. Just remember not to use salt water in your sauna, as it can corrode the heater. Why not collect rainwater and use it instead!

Electric lighting or natural light

The options for electric lighting in an indoor sauna are endless. Whether you prefer dim, cleverly hidden spotlights or want LED lights to add color to the experience, the options are limitless as long as your imagination is sufficient.

Outdoor saunas are usually built with windows to let natural light in. Windows also allow you to see the surrounding scenery and make the sauna space feel more spacious.

If there is no electricity, you can bring a hurricane lamp into the sauna, especially if you are bathing after sunset. But remember, never leave a lamp unattended!
